Medical assistance

Transportation of medicines/Sharp objects

As a general rule, passengers are permitted to carry medication and related equipment (includes needles, syringes and injection pens) for the treatment and monitoring of their medical conditions on board.

Passengers needing to carry medication should be aware that the legal status of medication in each country varies greatly. The requirements for transporting medicines for personal use across international borders vary and are implemented in different ways. This applies to over-the-counter medicines as well as prescriptions by the doctor. The regulations concerning the compulsory medical prescription to have during the trip age are also variable. In order to avoid problems at security or customs, we strongly recommend that medicines are clearly labeled and accompanied by a prescription or a letter from your doctor confirming the type of medicine transported.

Please note that the effects of certain treatments such as tranquilizers may be altered by altitude or alcohol. Please consult your GP for this.

Needles and syringes

Carrying sharp objects on board may be subject to local rules and safety procedures and is beyond the airlines control. Please check with the security and customs offices you are transiting through.

It is strongly recommended that syringes and injection pens are carried together and are clearly labeled to identify your name and medication OR that you carry a medical certificate or confirmation letter from your doctor stating your name and medical treatment . Used syringes must be placed in the “sharp objects” box provided for this purpose, which all carriers have on board. If you need assistance, please contact our flight attendants.

NOTE: For flights departing from Australia, needles may be carried in carry-on baggage however passengers must have proof of use on board.

Keep these medications cool during the flight

Please note that we will not be able to keep medicines for passengers fresh. Any medication that needs to be kept cool must be carried in an insulated bag by the passenger. Passengers may bring their own refrigerant systems of less than 2.5 Kilograms (4.41 lbs) which are properly carried to allow CO2 to evaporate freely. Passengers must inform airport personnel that they are carrying this refrigerant system on board at check-in.

Recommendations to passengers

Consult the medical rules for the countries in which you are going to travel with the competent authorities. This is particularly important if you intend to travel with regulated medications.

It is important to always carry medicines in labeled containers as when they are dispensed to you by your pharmacist.

Have a copy of all prescriptions, including generic names for medications, in accordance with medications in your carry-on, especially for controlled substances and injections.

Make sure that the appropriate equipment, medicines and original boxes are carried in both hand and checked baggage.
