New Caledonia is a French overseas territory in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. It lies roughly between Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific islands.
The New Caledonian archipelago comprises Grande Terre, the main island, and numerous smaller islands, such as the Loyalty Islands (Ouvéa, Lifou, Maré and Tiga) and the Isle of Pines. The surrounding waters are home to exceptional lagoons, making New Caledonia one of the world’s largest coral reefs.
