– If your child is under two years old, they can sit on an adult’s lap restrained with a separate seat belt, or in a child restraint attached to the airplane seat.

– An adult can have a child under the age of two sitting on his lap.

– Babies must also travel with a plane ticket, the price of which is equivalent to about 10% of the price of that of an adult. If the child is not yet born, reserve a seat for yourself and contact our Customer Service after the birth.

– If your child turns two before the return flight, you must book a ticket for them.

Children

Any passenger between the ages of 2 and 11 is considered a child. The child discount is generally 25% on the price excluding taxes. Passengers between the ages of 12 and 15 traveling within Europe can also take advantage of the child discount when accompanied by an adult.

Travel documents for minors

The necessary travel documents may vary by country. In some countries, a letter of authorization from parents or guardians is mandatory for minors traveling alone or accompanied by only one parent or guardian. This authorization may be required when entering or leaving the country. To find out if an authorization for minors is necessary on a specific route, contact the local authorities of the country of departure, as well as the embassy of the country of destination.

Registration

At Helsinki Airport, a check-in counter is reserved for people traveling with children. Marked with standard international symbols, the Passenger Assistance counter is open during peak hours. Outside these hours, customers traveling with children can contact the other counters.

Strollers

Transporting pushchairs in the hold of the aircraft is free of charge. If possible, please disassemble your stroller. Please store both parts of the stroller in plastic bags or other packaging to protect it during transport.

Finnair advises you to protect your stroller when travelling. Thin plastic bags are available at the check-in counter at Helsinki Airport.

At most airports, strollers can be borrowed to travel between the check-in area and the boarding gate.

Infant seats and infant car seats

If your child is under two years old and you have reserved a seat for them on the plane, they can travel with an infant seat or an infant car seat adapted to their age.

Before bringing an infant seat on board, you must obtain Finnair’s confirmation from our customer service. You must present the instructions for the seat when you board the aircraft, so that we can verify the wording of its safety certification. However, we cannot guarantee that your infant seat will be compatible with the airline seat you have reserved for your child. If your infant seat is not adaptable to the seat of the aircraft or if it cannot be fixed correctly, we will place it in the luggage rack or the cargo hold.

Infant seats should be fitted with a three or five point harness and attached to the device seat facing rearward. Infant car seats must be fitted with a five-point harness and will be secured to the forward-facing device seat.

Your infant seat or infant car seat must be a certified child restraint. It must be approved for transport use in one of the following ways:

1. The seat is approved for use in motor vehicles in accordance with the United Nations standard ECE R44.03 or later series of amendments.

2. The seat is approved for use in aircraft by one of the Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA), the Federal Aviation Administration or the Air Transport Association of Canada (based on a standard national technical) and approved accordingly.

3. The seat is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft in accordance with Canadian standard CMVSS 213/213.1.

4. The seat is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft under the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 213, and manufactured to that standard after February 25, 1985. U.S. approved child restraints manufactured after this date must display the following statements in red letters: (1) This child restraint system meets all Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards; and (2) This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft.

5. The seat is approved for use in airplanes according to the German Qualification Procedure for Child Restraint Systems for Use in Airplanes (TÜV Doc.: TÜV/958-01/2001).

prams

Finnair offers prams on all of its intercontinental flights. You must reserve front row seats to use a pram; you can make the reservation through the online service Select your seat. If you are traveling on a Finnair leisure flight (AY1000 series), you can reserve your seat online via the additional benefits services on leisure flights. Seats are chargeable.

Our cabin crew will provide you with a bassinet and help you set it up once you board the plane.

If your child is under two years old, they must be seated on an adult’s lap and wear a separate seat belt, or in a child restraint attached to the aircraft seat; this instruction is particularly important during take-off, landing and periods of instability (caused for example by turbulence).

The interior length of our prams is 70 cm. The child using the pram must not weigh more than 9 kg. The pram is recommended for children up to six months old.

Meals for children

You can order a meal suitable for children two years and older when you book your plane tickets. These meals are available in business and economy class on all of our scheduled intercontinental flights. Our standard economy class meals are also suitable for children. For leisure flights (AY1000 series), you can order a child’s meal via the Additional services for leisure flights.

We keep baby food jars in reserve on all scheduled intercontinental flights, but please note that their availability is limited.

Entertainment for children

On our intercontinental flights as well as on our leisure flights, we distribute toys and other entertainment items at the start of the flight. All of these items are child safe, high quality and suitable for use on board. The entertainment material your child will receive depends on the duration of the flight and the age of your child.

We ensure that all films shown on our leisure flights are suitable for families and children. Our selection of films changes three times a year. We also offer children’s cartoons.

Travel Assistance

Medical problems

Drugs

If you need to take medication during the flight or at the airport, carry it in your hand luggage. Combine medications in a separate bag, preferably keeping the original packaging. Also take your doctor’s prescription and certificate with you, especially if your condition requires drug injection treatment. Unfortunately, we cannot store medication in our refrigerators. If your care needs to be refrigerated, please ask your pharmacist for advice on the various options available.

Medical Equipment

In general, breathing apparatus such as portable oxygen concentrators (POC) and apnea respiratory equipment (PAP) are allowed on board. Nevertheless, an authorization from the airline is systematically required.

The majority of CPAP devices require the installation of a medical inverter on board to function properly. Not all aircraft have an inverter. The availability of this equipment on board can be checked within 72 hours of departure. The inverter is made available to passengers free of charge for long-haul flights.

Food cannot be guaranteed on board. You must therefore be able to do without the breathing apparatus if necessary. If you have battery-powered equipment, please ensure that your device has enough battery power to operate for at least 150% of the expected flight time (including transfer time). If the equipment uses radio frequencies (Bluetooth for example), it must be deactivated during the flight.

Cabin crew are not required to offer assistance to any particular passenger, as they are responsible for the safety of everyone on board. Flight attendants are trained in first aid and are not authorized to administer injections or medication.

Disability assistance

reduced-mobility-wheelchairs

In order to ensure that your trip goes as smoothly as possible, please inform us beforehand of any disabilities for which you would need assistance. An assistant will be at your disposal to help you move around the airport and to accompany you to the plane. Wheelchairs are available at all airports for travel between check-in and boarding.

Before you travel

Please let us know of your disability or assistance needs when booking your tickets. If you have already made the booking, you can use this form. In order for us to put the necessary arrangements in place, please contact us no later than 48 hours before the departure of your flight.

If you bought your tickets or travel package from a tour operator, contact them directly.

Wheelchairs and mobility aids are always transported at no additional cost if you tell us that you will be traveling with this equipment 48 hours before departure and that there is enough space in the hold of the aircraft. For more information, see Wheelchairs.

Travelling with service dogs

Dogs specially trained to assist disabled passengers are carried free of charge in the cabin on all our flights. If you are traveling with your guide dog, hearing dog or assistance dog, please let us know at least 48 hours before departure.

At the airport

Within the European Union, airport staff are required to assist disabled and passengers with reduced mobility.

If you need help, an assistant will meet you when you arrive at Helsinki airport. You also have the option of going directly to the check-in counter.

If you wish to benefit from our assistance, present yourself at least two hours before take-off at one of the pick-up points marked with the international symbol for access to the disabled. At Helsinki Airport, pick-up locations are located in car parks P3 (level 2) and P5 (level -2), on the departures level, outside Terminal 2 and in check-in area 201 -232. Disabled parking spaces are also available.

If you don’t have If you don’t need help getting to the check-in counter but would like to be accompanied during or after check-in, be sure to arrive at the check-in counter at least one hour before take-off.

At Helsinki Airport, a check-in counter is reserved for people requiring assistance. Marked with standard international symbols, the ‘Special Passengers’ counter is open during peak hours. Outside these hours, customers requiring assistance can contact the other counters. If you wish, our staff will accompany you from the check-in counter to the plane.

You will be allowed to board before other passengers so that our staff can discuss with you what assistance you need on board and are able to help you more easily on the plane, if necessary. Therefore, we recommend that you arrive at the boarding gate no later than the time indicated on the boarding pass.

During the flight

For safety reasons, passengers with reduced mobility will be seated on the window side.

All Finnair aircraft are equipped with multiple seats with flip-up armrests, so you can sit down easily.

Finnair does not provide assistive equipment, such as cushions to raise the seat. You must be able to sit in a standard airplane seat.

For intercontinental flights, a wheelchair designed for lavatory access is available in Airbus A340-300, A330-300 and A350-900 aircraft. In addition, storage space is reserved for folding manual wheelchairs in Airbus A350-900 aircraft. Contact our Customer Care for more information.

On board these aircraft, cabin crew will help you use the wheelchair in the cabin. Please note that you must be able to sit on the seat and settle into your chair alone or with the help of your companion.

If you need help taking medicine, eating, going to the bathroom, getting up or communicating, you must be accompanied by a personal assistant.

Want to know more ? Contact our customer service.

After the flight

Upon arrival, a member of staff will welcome you and provide you with all the assistance you need to continue your journey. If you need help getting off the plane, we will ask you to wait until the other passengers have exited so that we have more room and time to help you.

After disembarking, we will accompany you to the means of transport you need to take (correspondence, car, taxi or bus).

Pregnancy

In general, Finnair follows the recommendations of the International Air Transport Association regarding air travel and pregnant women.

– On most Finnair flights, you will not be accepted if you are in your last month of pregnancy. In other words, you can travel until your 36th week of pregnancy. However, you will be able to take short Finnair flights for travel within Finland or Scandinavia up to your 38th week of pregnancy, provided the pregnancy is progressing normally and there are no complications or signs of impending birth.

– If you are traveling after your 28th week of pregnancy, you must provide us with a medical certificate attesting that your pregnancy is progressing normally. You will need to obtain this certificate during or after the 27th week. You will only need to provide us with one certificate, except in the event of changes during your pregnancy.

– You can take a newborn in good health on all Finnair routes without restriction as long as they are at least two days old.

Allergies

If you need to follow a special diet, let us know and we will serve you a special meal. Special meals are available on all intercontinental flights operated by Finnair and in business class on our European flights. You can request a special meal under Manage my booking. Send your order no later than 24 hours before departure. Learn more

If you are traveling economy class on one of our flights within Europe, you can choose a paid meal from our menu Sky Bistro< /a> offering a varied selection of quality dishes and drinks, made with seasonal products and combining the best flavors from Europe and Asia. Specific diets are also taken into account.

Important information for passengers with peanut allergies

Gluten-free meals (Gluten free meal, GFML) and special meals (special meal, SPML, available in business class) do not contain nuts and are therefore suitable for the majority of people with peanut allergies. However, we cannot guarantee the total absence of traces of peanuts in our dishes, due to the preparation process. In addition, we cannot control the products brought on board by other passengers, nor make special arrangements such as the broadcasting of announcements in the cabin.

If you suffer from a severe allergy, please note that we cannot guarantee the total absence of allergenic products in our meals, the cabin or the environment of the aircraft. Consult your doctor before purchasing tickets to learn about potential risks and ways to minimize them. If you have been prescribed an Epipen-type epinephrine/adrenaline self-injector device, be sure to pack it in your hand luggage. Please keep your medication in a separate bag, preferably in its original packaging. Also bring your prescription and your doctor’s certificate.

You are allowed to bring your own food on board, provided you follow the security regulations for carry-on baggage. Please note that food cannot be reheated during the flight.
